Pre-Algebra
Middle School
Mathematics and Computer Science
This course helps students build the foundational skills and strategies necessary to become confident and capable mathematical thinkers. Daily instruction focuses on core concepts and procedural fluency in topics such as the number system, exponent rules, scientific notation, roots and irrational numbers, geometric figures (including triangles, cones, cylinders, spheres, prisms, and pyramids), transformations and congruence, similarity, solving and graphing linear equations, systems of equations, scatter plots, data analysis, and functions. Students use visual representations to connect concrete and abstract ideas, allowing mathematical patterns and principles to become meaningful. Real-world examples are brought to life through Peer Model videos and 21st Century instruction, helping students see how math applies beyond the classroom. Through discussion prompts, students develop reasoning, vocabulary, and communication skills while learning to critique others' ideas and justify their own. The course fosters a growth mindset and encourages productive struggle, reinforcing that mistakes are opportunities for deeper understanding. Together, these elements ensure students are prepared to succeed in future math courses and real-life problem-solving.
